He grew up in Pinellas County, attended Seminole High School, St. Pete College and Eckerd College where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1984. He began his professional career with the Florida Park Service, working as a state park ranger from 1985 to 1989 and as a district biologist based at Oscar Scherer State Park from 1989 to 1992. In 1992, he accepted an environmental specialist position with Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources and served as a land manager for several Sarasota County parks and preserves until his retirement in August 2024.
